(Fake) Lindsay Lohan gives a hummer in an SUV

by BSN

Mark, Genny, & Dahmer at Rock 105, a local Jacksonville radidio-show, put together a Lindsay Lohan tribute video. Brings tears to my eyes... [sniff!]

Love the ending!

These guys host a poker tourney every few weeks here in Jacksonville, so let's give 'em a little love.

Douchebag Quarterback

by BSN

The best t-shirt I've seen in a long time!

So, yeah, I caught that one on the website of one of Tampa's news station. Figures someone in a conference-rival town would come up with that one.

My Jacksonville Jaguarss play the the Falcons early in the season, so it's looking pretty good that they're not going to have to worry about containment on Vick. However, these things have a way of firing a team up, making them want to show they're about more than just one star player, so I think anyone playing the Falcons early better not take them lightly. Any given Sunday, and all that.

Obligatory Poker Content: Um, no, too many 2-outers this week. Let's wait til things swing back my way.

Review: BetWin-Poker

I just wanted to take a moment to welcome a new advertiser: BetWin-Poker.

BetWin-Poker is an independent online poker information site. In fact, there is an online poker guide that I wish I'd had when I started playing online poker 3 years ago. To the experienced player this information may not be attractive, but to a newbie like we all once were, this can help you to understand what the process is for getting to the point of playing for real money. The explanations of the types of tournament variations found in online poker would have been nice to have as well.

The online poker site reviews are set up nicely as well. Each is laid out in a template that presents the information in a consistent manner, making it easy to compare bonuses or game variations or a half-dozen other factors to be used in making poker room decisions.

Again, welcome to BetWin-Poker. I know many of you surfing into this site are new to the game and I'd encourage you to check them out before you sign up to play.

World's Hottest Female Sports Reporters [PICS]

I've become jaded about the web. But, this article makes me believe in the awesomeness that is the internet, once more. A sampling:
"Hot female sports reporters were invented to increase ratings. I mean, to provide up-to-the-minute sideline analysis of injuries, strategies, and mini-interviews. And to increase ratings. For the most part, these women are articulate and knowledgeable about sports. But for the most part, us men don't care. Boobies! Boobies! Boobies!"

Outlaw College! Tuition causes teen to rob bank

by BSN

Teen accused of robbing bank for tuition
The Associated Press

A college student accused of robbing a bank had been worried for months about his mounting tuition bills, his mother said.
Hey, some idiot Congressman blamed online poker for causing another idiot to rob a bank, so when are we going to outlaw college?

Jacksonville poker player gets check-raised by the police

police arrest jacksonville poker player and bad fatherby BSN

It's all over the news. Jacksonville poker players are going to all be painted with the 'degenerate' brush because of one idiot.

From the Florida Times-Union:

Dad's curiosity about poker, leaving kids in car, lands him in jail

Moron.

That's it, just give people the ammunition they want to paint all poker players as degenerate gamblers that neglect their children. Smooth move, Ex-Lax.

Curious? Well, now you know. Here's a list of things you learned:

1. Poker is not worth endangering your kids.

2. Poker is not worth going to jail.

3. Poker is not worth risking a divorce.

4. Poker is not worth risking losing your kids.

What's good for poker and what would have been great for poker

After all the theatrics and histrionics displayed by Hevad "RaiNKhaN" in the past week, I think both the crowd and ESPN producers were a little disappointed in the early going. Khan didn't seem to be himself. Although he had a playable stack, the heavy early action kept him from getting into pots. And, when Khan can't get in a pot, he rarely seems happy. Further, we don't get to see his dancing, nor hear his primal screams.

That has all changed post 3pm today. With play now six-handed, Khan has started getting involved. In fact, even when we thought he would be shut out of pots by raises, he has come over the top. Within a span of just a few minutes, Khan was all-in twice.

From Pokerstarsblog.com So, he played the final table exactly the way he plays an SNG. Super tight early, then force other people to make the tough decisions. Standard Turbo SNG strategy, and the way he plays every one of them.

I don't blame him, dance with the one that brung ya', right?

Sounds like Jerry Yang is a solid citizen (hell, after the angle-shooting, cheating, attempted-welching Jamie Gold, who wouldn't be?) and will probably be a gracious ambassador for the sport. But a part of me really wanted Rainkhan to win. For poker. Having a wildman with personality would have been killer, and the marketing potential and endorsement opportunities would have been off the charts. Any gamers not playing poker now would have been selling their Playstations for buy-ins the way dead moneythat all us fat white rednecks snuck $50 online when our wives weren't looking after Moneymaker won.

Mmmmmm, fish....

As it is, he'll land a sweet deal. The cameras love a guy like that. Any poker room would get their money's worth and then some by putting this guy on the circuit.

When last I checked...

pokerby BSN

... Rainkhan was still in the main event, on the final table bubble. At the time, (~ 6 a.m.), he had a decent stack, with an M of about 30 or so. I'd give you chip counts, but Tony G will send goon squads out to get me because he comes from the street.

Heh.

Plus, PokerNews.com is blocked here at work, so there's that too.

Now, it makes even more sense

by BSN

As I pointed out in my prior post about feed counts for Blogger blogs, using the feed redirect feature in Blogger gives you a more realistic picture of your reach.

My feed numbers went from ~40 to 222 overnight. It remains to be seen if that number holds up going forward. After all, feedburner numbers historically bounce within a range and it is not uncommon to see inexplicable spikes and valleys. But, let's assume it holds up somewhere in that range.

No, I didn't add 180 subscribers in a night. Those were subscribers built up over the course of nearly 3 years of blogging, subscribers that were lost and invisible to me. So, I dug into the data at feedburner to see where all these people were hiding.

Remember a post from a while back about a Netvibes tab I created and shared? The data shows approximately half of you subscribing did so through Netvibes. The tab has been downloaded 105 times to date. Since I included some of my favorite blogs on that tab, each of those blogs should have seen a corresponding increase in their subscriber numbers as well. So, these people owe me a beer:

Or, you know, a link would work too. ;-)

That's the end of the blogging posts over here. Back to poker in my next post. Or, you know, some geigh thing, like the Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo sex pictures and how their lawyers are earning overtime scrambling to every website that publishes them.

Al? Gonna come through for us?

How to get a more complete picture of your feed circulation

by BSN

I almost never blog about blogging on this blog.

(What an ugly sentence that is, eh?)

But, I thought I'd point something out that everyone might want to know. If you missed it earlier this week, Feedburner announced Feedburner Integration for Blogspot Blogs. You might know that Feedburner has been acquired by Google, owner of Blogger. It looks like they've already started rolling out the complementary services.

Why is this important?

Well, basically, that feedburner chicklet you may be using to display your subscriber count only picks up a fraction of your subscribers, if you purposely or inadvertently (like me) offered multiple feeds to your readers. So, feedburner may not be picking up many of your subscribers. Using the redirect option for Blogger allows you to consolidate all of those feed counts to get a true picture of your reach. If you remember when I first migrated to the new blogger, I appeared to break my feed and/or lose sight of my subscribers.

Just follow the instructions in the Blogger Quickstart Guide. It takes about 30 seconds to do and so simple a monkey can do it. Which is obvious, because I did.

If Rainkhan can play 30 tables at once, why can't I keep up with a couple of blog feeds?

by BSN

My co-worker took some PTO this week and I've been hopping around pretty good. Unfortunately, that hasn't left much time to keep up with my favorite WSOP bloggers.

I did notice, however, a bunch of search hits on this blog for "rainkhan". Then, I received teh following comment from Elie:
he is currently chip leader in WSOP main event. maybe 2nd now. gus hansen is moving up. he's in the top 3 anyway
Thanks for the update!

I first came across him indirectly during a chat at a low limit SNG by some players that were sure he was a bot. Later, I played him a bunch of times in high-buy-in SNGs on 'Stars. No way to avoid it, really, with him cranking on so many tables simultaneously. He just played solid ABC poker, folding nearly everything until the bubble then pushing with anything based on table position and chipstack relative to competitors.

My god. One table in a tournament that will run two weeks. He must be bored out of his mind. ;-)

Before they were stars (well, one of them, anyway)

by BSN

A man loves the meat in his youth that he cannot endure in his age.

- William Shakespeare

Just finished watching an old HBO Young Comedians show. For you young 'uns out there, this was a show they put on a couple times a year with the comics that might not necessarily be young, but were unknown enough that this was considered a big break.

I caught the tail end of the show, after watching a fan-freaking-tastic Entourage. I popped in during the middle of Ray Romano's set, back when he wore ties and was still funny and wasn't dropping 10K on WSOP entries. Dana Carvey was hosting, back before we all got tired of his Johnny Carson and Jimmy Stewart imitations.

By the way, if you haven't seen his bit about Jimmy Stewart having sex for the first time, you're missing comedy gold.jeaneane garofalo when she was cute

Next came Jeaneane Garofalo back when she was cute and looked eerily like Norah Jones and was capable of, you know, being funny instead of, you know, shrill. And closing out the show - I repeat, closing out the show - was Nick DiPaulo when he still had potential.

Good stuff.

Making lemons out of lemonade

Ireland's top bookmaker, Paddy Power PLC, paid out more than $13,500 on Friday to people who bet that Al Gore would be arrested. Trouble was, the company neglected to specify which one.

Related articlepaddy power

Give them credit for paying out. Every single thinking person on the planet knew which Al Gore they were talking about. They didn't have to pay, IMO.

Good move, though. And, let's face it, $13,500 for the worldwide publicity they get is the cheapest advertising they'll ever receive.

A fool and his money are soon parted

by BSN

About a week or so ago I wrote about Florida rasing poker limits. Today's PPA blog linked to an article in the Miami Herald about the Seminoles reining in the players after initially giving the new law a loose interpretation.

Stories of high 5- and low 6-figure posts abound.

As predicted, a skilled player had 5 days of open season on the fish at the Seminole's casino. Now, the season is still open, the fish will still be there, but the pond will be smaller.

Ouch!

by BSN

So let me get this straight... Pauly's good, and so is Otis? BG hurt my feelings!

Way to go out on a limb there BSN.

I eagerly await your upcoming reviews of pizza (my guess: it's good) and puppies (cute?) on future BSN blog posts.

Sincerely yours,

BG

Hard to believe, eh? smile_embaressed

Here's the thing, though: 60% of the traffic on this blog comes from search engines. I KNOW the people listed over in the blogroll already know this. But the folks looking for this stuff might find it interesting:

  1. bucklox
  2. phil mickelson illegitimate child
  3. big slick
  4. pokerletter.org
  5. slick pussy
  6. big nuts
  7. pokerletter
  8. rainkhan
  9. poker scams
  10. carbon poker cheat

Ok, maybe #2, #5, #6 don't care. Plus, BG.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm stunned "bucklox" is the top search term for this blog. Let's make it easy for you guys, here's the bucklox posts:

Why pay for poker books and videos when you can get this sort of brilliance on YouTube?

Sometimes, I like to check out my own Big Slick Nuts

by BSNI like Big Slick NutsJust looking back at some old posts, and came across this gem tucked into some actual poker content:
Mrs. Big has me scratching my ever-loving-head these days.

She asked me to stop at Sam’s and pick up a Click-n-Pull order today. I get there, and there’s a float stacked high with emergency food: 128 bottles of water, a case of Gatorade, gobs of canned soups, veggies, and Chef Boyardee, 50 lbs of dog food,30 rolls of TP, filter masks, god knows how many maxi-pads… oh, and there was a second order she placed an hour later with hand sanitizer and 6 more gallons of Zephyrhills water because apparently 128 bottles wasn’t enough.

We’re moving in 3 weeks. We’re spending our days weeding out crap, and here she is bringing it back in. I can’t even bring myself to tell you how much this crap cost.

Bird Flu.

Yep, she’s afraid that society is going to break down if there’s bird flu.
I crack myself up sometimes... ;-)

My review of the WSOP bloggers

At the risk of being accused of fellating some great bloggers in order to get some links, I've got to say that this year's posts have been the best ever. With my wife having surgery last week, and then losing a few more days while moping about my sprained ankle, I was forced into catch-up mode this week. Reading some of these posts in batches made me appreciate them all the more. Sometimes we read this stuff day-to-day and fail to appreciate the craft and the art of the storytelling.

I'm not talking about the updates and chip counts, I'm talking about those great human interest stories that have been produced. The storytellers. It's all I read. It's all I care to read. Gone is my obsession with following the action as I did in my early days of poker and blogging; now I want to be entertained, I want to think, and I want to know the players and the writers on a more human level. My interests have matured, and thankfully, so has the blogging.

Here are some thoughts I've had:

Pauly's writing has matured and he's taken it to another level. His posts starting in the 2005 WSOP were great, but compared to 2007 it's easy to see a writer that has come into his own. Several years ago, most of his posts were funny and interesting, but there was almost a desperate quality to them - like "I'm really working fucking hard so someone better appreciate it". Today, his posts are written with the confident, easy tone of the veteran who knows he's good at what he does and isn't trying to prove himself.

No disrespect to the other Pokerstars bloggers, but Otis stands head and shoulders above the pack. Gone is the "I can't believe I'm getting paid to do this" tone from 2005 when he started reporting from the Bahamas and Europe, replaced with the sense that a real insider is giving us stories we won't read anywhere else. With most corporate blogs, the posts are written more like press releases that are focused on the features and benefits of the latest offering. It would be easy to simply report chip counts and the status of the various Pokerstars players, but Otis gives value beyond this for which I hope he's being compensated - well. There are times when you can just tell someone is in a good place in their life, and his peace comes through in the easy tone of his writing. Otis is telling the story of the WSOP through his eyes, from his perspective, rather than just reporting the status of Team 'Stars.

Oh, and if Otis stops at your table during a key hand, beat him about the head and shoulders - the guy is a cooler.
