So funny...

by BSN

I thought I'd try out some of the smaller poker sites so I did a quick search for some free money and found something about Pitbull Poker giving away $5 free for signing up. So I did, got my $5, went to the tables and there were something like 30 people playing. So, it's no surprise I'm hearing they may be in trouble (a rumor about servers being spirited out of Costa Rican offices, or something?). Anyway, if you know what's going on there, drop me a note in comments. The website is up, but I didn't try to go into the lobby yet.

I've been too busy to play since that night. Slammed at work, taking on bigger responsibilities and I won't be able to transition my current full-time responsibilities for another 2 months. I hafta make time soon, though. I got an itch, and it needs scratching. :-)

No Shit. My AK, with an A on the flop, got pwned by 7-4 off with all the money going in on the flop. Runner-Runner straight and IGHN.

I hate this effin game.

It's entirely possible I'm the worst poker player on the planet

by BSN

What else could one conclude when I do things like say to myself, "I bet this bastard called my pre-flop raise with 7-4 sooted, and just snapped off my Aces with that river four...", and then make the call for all my chips. Just to prove I'm right. And I am.

Beware. I'm fixin' to go all Wafflicious now...

George Effin' Will

by BSN

If you haven't read George Will's Sunday column, you should. Warms the cockles of my heart. The sub-cockles, too.

After reading about the saga of Boku87 on the Pokerstars blog, I had to try the micro SNGs. The results were predictable. In my first two attempts, I was bounced with KK vs. QTo and a runner-runner flush, then my JJ got crushed by the mighty A5o. Yes, I raised pre-flop. Yes, the blinds were high enough that one would think an opponent might think twice.

Later, I played a token satellite with Full Tilt points and swept through to my token in remarkably quick time, just in time for the 28K Guarantee. I played well and made great decisions, but was card dead all night, with the exception of a QQ hand that doubled me up at the right time. I went out somewhere around 230 or so, well short of the money, but I felt good about my play and had no regrets.

Can I just say...

by BSN

I'm liking the new lobby at Fill Tilt.

I don't know what the prevailing opinion is amongst the poker bloggeratti since I'm a little behind on reading the blogs.

But, I like it. Clean. Easy to understand filters. My only criticism is move the video tour off the lobby. I accidentally clicked it while playing and lost my internet connection.

Yeah, my connection sucks like that.

God help me...

by BSN

I've started playing poker again, after a many-months layoff. Starting all the way at the bottom: .05/.10 of FTP with my massive $5 bankroll. Yeah, didn't get around to doing that SNG challenge. A bad infection in my leg left me out of sorts for many weeks.

Anyway, I don't use a 'waffles-roll' (when your monthly reload comes from FTP) so this is going off the remnants of my last disaster.

What the hell. Over three years ago I started with $1 won in a freeroll and wound up playing $200 Turbo SNGs in 6 months before I lost my nerve and cashed-out. I'll grind away for a couple days, see what happens...

Do I need a challenge?

by BSN

Contemplating another SNG challenge. I haven't been playing very much lately, not even the Mookie, and need something to motivate me to sit and play for an hour or two each night. My last challenge was in 2005-06, when I won a $1 in a freeroll on AP and ran it up into thousands of dollars over the next 6 months, playing nothing except SNGs. I cashed that out long ago to pay bills.

I think I have $6 or so, so I can start playing the $1 games and see if I get a little lucky in the beginning. We'll see.

World Blogger Chamionship of Online Poker

by BSN

Online Poker

I have registered to play in the PokerStars World Blogger Championship of Online Poker!

The WBCOOP is an online Poker tournament open to all Bloggers.

Registration code: 890256

If you've never played in these, they are a blast. Last year I won an xBox by proving I was the 16th best poker-playing blogger in the world. Looks like the tournament is structured a bit differently this year, so we'll see how that works out. I kinda liked the one-shot, win-your-way-to-swag set-up from previous years. Looks like this year requires a bit more than a one-night commitment. Check it out for yourself.

My Poker Game

by BSN

Oh man, I had a to-do item for today that said "Write a post about my poker game".

What game? I'm playing some seriously shitty tight-weak poker right now. Gotta shake it off, but I'm getting creamed by 2 and 3 outers, and running pairs into overpairs hand after hand, so I just expect to get bad luck and fold. Anyone that has played with me the past few weeks knows I'm playing scared. Gotta shake it off.

So, now I can at least scratch through this item on my to-do list, such as it is.

Lucky grinder

by BSN

I can't tell you how many times I've been dealt T5o in the past week. Unreal.

But, the poker grind is going ok. Still up and down, but long term the slope is positive. I can't really say it's going well, though, because I've made a couple dumb moves where I've smacked my head and said 'what are YOU thinking'?!?!?!

Better lucky than good, though, knowwhatimean?

It's an up and down life

by BSN

I need to find a poker game in Huntsville. I've asked at work but nobody seems to play. Too many evenings are being spent with Ryan and Simon and Paula and Randy.

My family flew up for a visit last weekend so we could nail down living arrangements. We were getting pretty frustrated finding a house to rent and were about to put a deposit on a small apartment when we drove around our preferred neighborhood one last time to check for rental yard signs. My 6 year old said "I think we should rent a blue house" and we turned a corner and there was a blue house for rent that was perfect - just renovated, big yard, cottage-style, nice neighborhood, good school, etc.

I told my wife to call right away because God just talked to us. You agnostics and atheists just keep your mouths shut on this one. It was too spooky to ignore. besides, this is my blog and I don't preach on yours.

Anywho, I played a little poker online this week, did very well, but then Friday night was 2-outer-winner night because I got lanced by 3 in a row. Made a tiny bit of the loss back last night with a win, but nowhere near enough to recover the prior night's loss.

Seriously, people that play on the weekend at Full Tilt really think QTo is a hand worth calling off all their chips with. Fishy waters, indeed.

Monsters, monsters everywhere

by BSN

So frustrating. Played the Mookie last night, made it 90 minutes or so, and busted calling off all my chips with AK vs. KK. It was right to make the call at that point, my M was down below 5, but I had the same situation Tuesday night in the $3 rebuy after being in awesome shape for more than 2 hours.

Just a bad run, nobody is really hitting longshots on me but I'm running good hands into better hands. That's the way it goes sometimes, hopefully it turns around soon.

What do you call it when the King flushes the toilet?

by BSN

So, I thought the biggest thing that would happen in this tournament is getting heads-up against another Big Slick.

This is a nice way to break my weekend-long losing streak:

Variance is a bitch.

It's been a brutal weekend. Every weekend is brutal, it seems - there are only ever two kinds of tables, those populated with donkeys playing any two cards and flopping the 8 and the 3 they needed to make their two pair and those populated with 9 people all playing the same super-tight game where you have at least 7 left by the eighth or ninth level.

Brutal. Or, maybe I just suck.

Final Table, $3 Turbo Rebuy

by BSN

It's been a while since I played a rebuy tourney, and those were the donkament. Something like 2 years since I played a non-blogger rebuy.

And it was a turbo, to boot. Yes, lots of sick play going on. Game selection, game selection.

I did the initial rebuy and the add-on, so I was into the game for $9. I don't know what people are thinking in these things, over 25% of the field was out before the rebuy period was over.

It's a REBUY. Not the place to go with your last $3. What other excuse is there for not sticking through the rebuy period?

Anyway, I bounced out in 5th for a profit of something like $128 for two and half hours. With an M below 5 most of the night, I wound up going out when I pushed 6-6 UTG into AA and couldn't manage to spike the 2-outer.

by BSN

It's been something like 11 months and 5 days since I won my first Mookie.

I think. I'm pretty tired, coming down off the diet pepsi max rush I used to stay awake.

Just got extremely lucky, as those who played with me will attest.

BSN wins the mookie

Much thanks to Mookie and the guys at BuddyDank for the entertainment.

Can you fold your way into the money in a Turbo SNG?

by BSN

I guess you can.

Started a SNG this afternoon and my internet connection went down during Level 2, right after the first orbit.

This just goes to show you how fishy the waters are these days:

Secrets of Winning Poker, Part 1

by BSN

Enjoyed another profitable week at the SNGs. I didn't play as much, but when I played I focused hard on making good decisions and playing well. I have a tendency to play too loose when I'm playing a lot, and lose sight of my mantra when I'm winning:

If you don't like the cards you have, fold them. They'll give you two new ones in a few seconds.

Keeping up with Big Slick Nuts

by BSN

I played a bit more towards the end of last week and over the weekend. I played in my first Riverchasers event, and I guess I assumed wrongly that everyone would be bloggers and others of our ilk, and cool with some of our idiosyncracies. One guy gave me shit for an awesome hammer play, and it kind of tilted me. What can I say, I am an emotional midget.

Anyway, I played like shit afterwards, trying to get situations that might allow me to go after him but they never presented themselves and later I was busted defending my big blind to what I thought was a steal attempt by the small blind. Ooops.

The SNGs continue to go well. I only broke even during the week, then hit well over the weekend again. My god, the fish pond is certainly stocked well on the weekends.

I'm continuing to post some great videos over at my poker video blog. I'm trying to balance between funny poker videos and news and strategy, so if you don't like the offering on a particular day, check back the following day for something completely different. I ran a series of videos last week of Potripper tournament play, and I'm dribbling out a decent series I found of SNG Strategy videos. Today is a funny video where Roland de Wolfe gets to make a dig at Phil Hellmuth, and it's nice and short at only 20 seconds. Of course, my favorites are strip poker videos, and I have a few in the archives and more coming up. Check 'em out, let me know what you think.
